This post is a little bit late seeing as Thanksgiving has come and gone, but gratitude shouldn’t be limited to just one day, right?

This year, I especially am thankful for the 26 wonderful years I had with my grandfather. He passed away on Wednesday. At 26, he is my first grandparent to pass away which is a rare blessing indeed. (more…)

Sophomore Slump

We all know about the proverbial sophomore slump. Downton Abbey’s 2nd season wasn’t nearly as good as the first. Mumford & Sons much-anticipated 2nd album failed to live up to the hype. Most people agree that “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (the 2nd book) was the worst in the HP series. And let’s not even talk about The Matrix. Or worse, Star Wars. (more…)

Iceland, Day 5

When we headed over to Iceland, Laura and I each had one thing we really wanted to do. I was determined to snorkel and she wanted to do a glacier hike. We got the snorkeling out of the way on our first full day and set out to tackle a glacier on (what should have been) our last full day. (more…)

Iceland, Day 3

Saturday was both the best and worst day of the trip. Best because we pretty much ate our way through the day (and who wouldn’t love that) and worst because it was so gross. We spent the day wandering around Reykjavik in a constant cold drizzle.

We didn’t really have an agenda. We’d known the weather was going to be bad and purposely didn’t plan anything. We spent the morning wandering around, checking out shops, etc. Before we knew it, it was time for lunch! (more…)

Iceland, Day 2

If I were a geologist, I would move to Iceland. It is fascinating.

Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the divide between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The ridge runs from the southwest corner of Iceland straight through to the northeast corner, dividing the country almost perfectly in half. These tectonic plates are moving apart at the surprising pace of 3 cm per year. That may not seem like a lot at first, but int terms of moving continents, that’s really fast. For a while they actually thought Iceland would be ripped into two islands, but there seems to be enough volcanic activity that the crevasses are filling in and the island is actually growing.

How cool is that? (more…)
